Stories from Suburban Road
On Thursday 28 and Friday 29 July, 15 talented students performed this year’s Drama Production Stories from Suburban Road. Adapted by Alan Becher from Tom Hungerford's autobiography of the same name, Stories from Suburban Road is a nostalgic and vivid look at growing up in an Australian rural setting between two world wars. We see Tom grow from a young boy excited to bring home a bantam hen, to a young man about to embark on an exciting writing career. In our production, Tom was played by seven different actors, each of whom gave a different perspective of this young man growing up in rural Perth during the 1920s and 1930s.
Stories from Suburban Road was the fourth drama production at Swan Valley Anglican Community School in as many years, and for the first time was performed in Building 1. This more intimate space lends itself to the style of this engaging ensemble piece about Tom Hungerford’s childhood experiences nearly a century ago.
The small cast comprising students from Years 7-12 worked tirelessly for over six months to workshop, develop and polish seven different scenes depicting a semi-rural upbringing in Perth’s southern suburbs.
Thank you to all students, staff and parents who assisted in any way with this year’s production. We look forward to your support of next year’s show, which will be even bigger and better.
