Caitlin Whittle at the Training Awards Final in Sydney

TRAINING AWARD FINALS 2018

Swan Valley Anglican Community School student, Caitlin Whittle (Year 12) wins the  National School Based Apprentice for 2018!

Caitlin, along with her fellow WA Training Award winners attended the Presentation awards on Friday 16 November in Sydney. Over 750 people gathered in the Sydney International Convention Centre to celebrate the nation’s best in vocational education and training (VET) sector. This is a huge accomplishment for Caitlin and the school is thrilled to congratulate her on her success. We wish Caitlin the best for her future endeavours.

WA TRAINING AWARD FINALS 2018

Outstanding Achievements for VET Students

Two of our Year 12 students, Jess Haydon and Caitlin Whittle were both shortlisted as finalists in separate categories: Jess for Vocational Student of the Year, and Caitlin for School Based Apprentice of the Year.

The prestigious ceremony was held at Crown Perth with over 600 guests in attendance. I am very proud to announce that Caitlin, our very own Trainee, won her category and will now be flying to Sydney in November to represent Western Australia at the Australian awards. As part of her award, Caitlin also received a $3,000 study grant. The citation on the WA Training Award website reads:
Juggling studying five ATAR subjects with a Certificate II in Hospitality, Caitlin has thrived in the workplace environment. She credits the experience with increasing her confidence and dedication, and has seen her grades improve as a result. Caitlin has transferred her new skills assisting with numerous school events. She is also a strong advocate for Swan Valley Anglican Community School’s hospitality program, presenting to younger students and writing articles for her local newspaper and the school website.

Although Jess didn't win his category, to have been shortlisted as a finalist was outstanding, particularly given that other finalists in his category were not all school-based. Jess has had some other very exciting news, however, as he has now been shortlisted for an award in the School Curriculum and Standards Authority’s awards for outstanding achievement in VET 2018. Jess will now attend an interview with the selection panel in coming weeks. Congratulations Jess – we wish you all the best!

SVACS Students Reach Finals

The WA Training Awards recognise and reward outstanding achievements of apprentices, trainees and vocational students, and the contribution to training made by trainers, training organisations and employers. Through celebrating these successes, the Awards continue to put our State's top achievers in the spotlight.

There are 12 categories in the WA Training Awards; eight individual categories and four organisation categories.

This year, Swan Valley Anglican Community School has two students who have made it all the way through to the finals in their categories – a wonderful achievement for both of them!

  • Caitlin Whittle (Year 12) – School-based Apprentice of the Year nominee
  • Jess Haydon (Year 12) – Vocational Student of the Year nominee

The WA School-based Apprentice of the Year is presented to a student who is undertaking a Certificate II or above qualification as a part time school-based apprentice or trainee. The award recognises the student’s commitment to their formal studies at school and in the workplace. The WA Vocational Student of the Year recognises an outstanding student’s achievement in a course of study leading to a nationally recognised qualification. A maximum of only four finalists are shortlisted state-wide for each individual award category.

Winners in individual categories receive $3,000 to further their training or kick start their careers. We look forward to hearing how Caitlin and Jess progress throughout the rest of the competition when they attend the presentation dinner at the Crown on 28 September 2018. They are both wished the best of luck in their respective categories.
