Italian Week 2018
Italian Week at SVACS did not disappoint, and this The week began in the Junior School with Italian Face-Painting, thanks to the skilful designs and work by local Face Painter, Teresa Obrien. Teresa wowed the lucky competition winners from the Junior School, with her customised Italian designs she created just for us.
The Early Childhood and Junior School classes all enjoyed an Italian Merendina (morning Tea cake) and an Italian style Cioccolata Calda (hot chocolate).
During the week, Early Childhood and Junior School classes were invited to incorporate some Italian elements within different learning areas. It was truly wonderful to see the whole school come together to celebrate a culture which has so easily become a part of what we do and see almost every day, and too often take for granted! Of particular note was the wonderful effort from the staff who enthusiastically threw in some Italian expressions into their own lessons throughout the week – much to the amusement of the students in their classes!
On Wednesday we celebrated the Italian Food Festival, with Vince’s Wood fired Pizza truck, the Pasta Cup truck, the Amici Gelato Cart and an Italian sweets stall all set up to give the old Basketball court area an Italian Festival atmosphere. It would not have been half as exciting, were it not for the amazing musical and singing talents of so many staff and students, who entertained us all during the Festival Italiano di SVACS! Many Middle School Italian students helped in the lead up to this day as committee members, and should be commended for their commitment and drive. Bravi!!
The luckiest group by far this year were the Year 9s who were transported to the Swan Italian Sporting Club, where together with some excited staff members, were given an unforgettable Italian experience! A delicious pasta lunch followed by gelato for dessert which was prepared for us by a delightful lady named Italia (such a perfect name!) and was accompanied by a wonderful mix of traditional and modern Italian music, thanks to talents of DJ’s Piero and Lina. After lunch, the students danced, played Limbo and had photos taken wearing an array of interesting costumes. Who could forget the concert-like atmosphere created by Lorenzo Fiorese, our Italian Language Assistant, as he sang and played the guitar for the crowd of excited Year 9s! Of course, our thanks must go out to Mr Cosimo Coniglio, the President of the Swan Italian Sporting Club, for taking such good care of us. Without his assistance and genuine enthusiasm for what we wanted to do for Italian Week, none of it would have been possible! Grazie di nuovo, Cosimo!
Finally, on the last day of the week, staff and students dressed in the Tricolore colours of verde, bianco and rosso to bring the week to a close. Needless to say, the Languages Department slept well on Friday evening, thoroughly satisfied after yet another successful Italian Week at SVACS!
