Statement of Philosophy
At Swan Valley Anglican Community School we understand the importance of setting a firm foundation for lifelong learning.
Children
We believe:
- Children are successful, capable and resourceful learners who are active contributors to their own learning.
- Children need to be valued as individuals, who bring with them their own heritage, interests and early life experiences.
- Children can develop risk taking skills and positive self-esteem through a supportive, safe and inclusive environment.
Therefore we:
- Implement a child-centred programme based upon the principles outlined in the Australian Curriculum and the National Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) – ‘Belonging, Being & Becoming’
- Develop learning programmes that are rich in language and promote the opportunity to discuss, enquire, investigate, demonstrate and reflect.
- Provide opportunities for students to reach their full potential by building on their personal interests, thoughts and ideas.
- Implement an inclusive approach to support a sense of belonging, high self-esteem and success.
- Encourage each child to reach their full potential in accordance with their individual ability and teach them to strive for their best.
Families
We believe:
- Trust, respect and collaboration form the basis of strong partnerships between families and staff.
- In working closely with parents in a reciprocal relationship.
Therefore we:
- Are committed to open communication with families which includes discussions, child portfolios, parent evenings, student diary and newsletters.
- Strive to have empathy and be responsive to family needs and provide support when required.
Programme
We believe:
- Children learn through collaboration and communication with other children and adults and through interacting with the environment.
- Children need opportunities to practice and consolidate their skills in key learning areas including: Literacy and Numeracy; whilst being creative and expressing their ideas.
- A programme should be rich in language and allow students to discuss, enquire, collaborate, investigate and reflect.
Therefore we:
- Implement a flexible programme that is responsive to the evolving nature of the early childhood environment and provides for different learning styles.
- Make observations of children and their interests and document their work to form the basis of the programme.
- Use both the indoor and outdoor environment to encourage the children’s ability to observe, perceive, explore, investigate, imagine, make choices and problem solve.
Staff
We believe:
- In employing staff who are committed to working for the best interests of children and families.
- That each staff member brings fundamental, personal qualities to the school environment such as empathy, respect, warmth and a passion for learning.
- In the importance of creating an environment of collegiality where personal and professional contributions are valued, communication is open and confidentiality is maintained.
Therefore we:
- Provide opportunities for staff to share in decision making and to obtain feedback.
- Provide a safe and comfortable working environment with, where possible, common DOTT time for collaborative programming within their year group.
- Provide ongoing professional development for staff.
