ASC Piano Competition Success

The Sixth Anglican Schools Commission Piano Competition has become National!

The sixth ASC Piano Competition was held in the Allan Shaw Centre of the Peter Moyes Anglican Community School. 152 competitors from ten of the fourteen ASC schools came together to compete in six categories before four specialist adjudicators. It was an especially exciting event as the winner of the inaugural 2017 Eastern States ASC Piano Competition namely Thomas Summerfield from Trinity Anglican College in Albury NSW flew over to compete, making the event a National one. There were 12 heats held in the morning and 22 finalists were selected for the afternoon finalists programme.

This year SVACS had the highest number of students entering the competition – a fantastic achievement indeed! It is a highlight for piano students in the school year as they can lead a very solitary life. Thus a bus load of pianists was most welcoming and heart-warming and a great reward for all their hard work and preparation. As usual the atmosphere was one of collegiality, support and plain good fun.

SVACS students were represented in five out of the six finals categories. From the left: Jordan Scott came second place in the Excellence category (AMEB 6 & above) for a spine tingling rendition of a Malaguena by Albeniz – quite a feat for one so young who needed a special pedal extension kindly organised by his mother Jenny.

Jessica Orr came first in the Faith category (AMEB Prelim/1) for an energetic precise and appropriately crazy performance of a piano version from the Barber of Seville.

Amy Jones came third place in the Integrity category (AMEB 4/5) for her beautiful performance of Comptine.

Grace Trainor obtained third place in the Justice category (AMEB 2/3) for a strongly spirited performance of a piano arrangement of Mozarts Eine Kleine Nachtmusik

Jayden Kock – after less than half a terms lessons – came third place in the Diversity category (AMEB Composition) for a sensitive and emotionally mature composition by himself.

Well done and congratulations to all the students who performed, the accompanying parents and the piano teachers Mrs Esther Arthur and Mrs Kerri Sloper. The event was facilitated and supported by the Head Music, Mr Graham Local and Miss Brooke Wilson.
