A select group of Year 10 Biology students were very lucky to participate in a live streamed DNA laboratory activity in conjunction with UWA. Students were introduced to techniques used in conservation genomics, PCR (polymerase chain reaction) and gel electrophoresis, and how data can help save our precious biodiverstiy. Using PCR to produce enough of the gene of interest, the samples were then loaded onto a gel and electrophoresis was used to visualise each gene's size. The students then discussed and compared their results via the live stream with Biology students from other schools.
This unique opportunity allowed them to learn about 3D mapping genomic techniques and practically use research grade equipment to copy (PCR) DNA from three iconic Australian mammals.
