Gifted and Talented Program -
Secondary School
At Swan Valley Anglican Community School, we recognise that high-ability learners demonstrate advanced potential in different ways and at different stages of development. Our Gifted and Talented Program in the Secondary School is designed to provide intellectually challenging learning experiences that extend thinking, nurture curiosity and support the development of advanced capabilities. Through carefully designed learning experiences, students are encouraged to think deeply, explore complex ideas and develop skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
Identifying and Supporting High-Ability Learners
Placement in extension learning experiences is based on a range of evidence, including reasoning assessments, academic performance, teacher insight and learning behaviours. This approach allows the school to recognise both consistently high achievement and emerging potential.
We also recognise that students may demonstrate strengths in different ways. Some students show high ability across many areas of learning, while others demonstrate a specific talent in thinking, creativity, leadership or problem-solving. Our program is designed to support this diversity and ensure students receive appropriate challenge and support.
A Tailored Approach to High-Ability Learning
Our program recognises that these learners benefit from different types of challenge as they progress through adolescence. At our School, we ensure these students have access to:
- Curriculum extension and acceleration
Opportunities to work at a faster pace or at a more complex level - Cross-disciplinary learning
Students explore complex ideas and problems by connecting concepts across learning areas - Ability‑grouped learning experiences
Targeted extension classes in key learning areas, designed to engage, challenge and motivate - Individual learning pathways
Personalised plans for students demonstrating exceptional ability in specific subjects or domains - Opportunities for early access to senior learning
Including pathways into ATAR‑level content, advanced electives and university‑linked programs
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Students are encouraged to extend their interests and abilities through a range of academic competitions, creative challenges and personal development opportunities. These experiences allow students to apply their learning, collaborate with peers and engage with complex ideas beyond the classroom.
