ANGLISCHOOLS CEO VISIT AND STAFF SERVICE RECOGNITION

We were delighted to welcome AngliSchools CEO, The Reverend Peter Laurence OAM, for a recent visit that coincided with a special staff celebration.

We were delighted to welcome AngliSchools CEO, The Reverend Peter Laurence OAM, for a recent visit that coincided with a special staff celebration. During his time at the School, Reverend Laurence joined staff for a special lunch honouring four outstanding team members who were each recognised with a 20‑Year AngliSchools Service Award. Congratulations to Mrs Sallyanne Bushe‑Jones, Mrs Elda Cappi, Mrs Joanne Crawshaw and Mrs Sharon Smith, whose collective decades of service have made an immeasurable contribution to our students, families, staff and wider school community. We are deeply grateful for their dedication, commitment and lasting impact.

The visit also provided an opportunity for Reverend Laurence to tour the campus, explore our new facilities, and observe vibrant learning in classrooms across the School. Spending time with students and staff highlighted the strong sense of community and purposeful learning that continues to flourish at Swan Valley Anglican Community School.

END OF TERM ASSEMBLY

Our End of Term Assembly provided an opportunity to come together as a community to celebrate Easter as well as the presentation of our Term 1 COMMITMENT Certificates.

Congratulations to all students and staff who received a COMMITMENT award for embracing our 2026 whole‑school theme: We set goals. We work steadily towards achieving them. We are proud of our success.

NEW RESOURCE CENTRE HOURS

The Resource Centre (Library) is now open and, from the start of Term 2, will operate daily from 7:00am to 5:00pm.

While we are still awaiting the arrival of some additional furniture due to shipping delays, all areas of the Resource Centre are now fully operational and being well utilised by staff and students.

FRIENDS OF SVACS MOTHER’S DAY BREAKFAST

We warmly invite all families to join us for the upcoming Friends of SVACS Mother’s Day Breakfast, to be held on Friday 8 May from 7:00am to 8:15am in the Multi‑Purpose Hall.

This special event provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the amazing mothers and carers in our school community. Tickets are $10 per adult and $5 per child and are available for purchase via Flexischools: https://flexischools.com.au/parents.
All family members are welcome to attend. RSVPs and ticket sales will close at 4:00pm on Monday 4 May. We look forward to seeing you there.

WACSSA CRICKET CARNIVAL

Our Years 5 and 6 students enjoyed a fantastic day at the WACSSA Cricket Carnival. Throughout the day, students demonstrated excellent cricket game sense, skill and teamwork against strong opposition.

Our Boys’ team played some great matches and finished fourth overall. Our Girls’ team, who trained diligently at lunchtime in the lead‑up to the carnival, remained undefeated throughout the day and finished in first place, winning the championship flag. Congratulations to all our wonderful cricketers on their achievements.

ACC SWIMMING CARNIVAL

Our students recently represented the School at the ACC Interschool Swimming Carnival, demonstrating pride, courage and outstanding sportsmanship.

There were many strong performances throughout the day, including Division 1 victories from William Fassett (U/16 Boys Butterfly) and Mason McCue (U/13 Boys Backstroke). Championship placings were also secured by Kain Jones (3rd, U/13 Boys), Coby Lutter (3rd, U/15 Boys) and Zoe Cahill (3rd, U/19 Girls). Further highlights included William Fassett being named Runner‑Up Champion in the U/16 Boys and breaking the School record in the 50m Butterfly with a time of 31.93 seconds, and Coby Lutter setting a new School record in the U/15 Boys Butterfly with a time of 32.72 seconds. We are extremely proud of all students for the way they represented our School.

WACSSA FLOORBALL CARNIVAL

Our Year 6 students had a wonderful experience at the WACSSA Floorball Carnival.

This year, staff from Revo Futsal supported the event by setting up barriers and umpiring matches, allowing students to experience continuous, boundary‑free floorball for the first time. Our Girls’ team finished fourth overall after a fun and competitive day, while our Boys’ team had a spectacular tournament, finishing in first place and winning the championship. Congratulations to all students involved.

JAPANESE IMMERSION STUDENTS

We were delighted to welcome 20 students from Nihon Gakuen Junior High School in Tokyo as part of an international immersion experience.

The Year 9 students were paired with buddies from Years 8 and 10 and participated in a wide range of classes and activities. Highlights included an AFL session led by our staff and students and a Kendama demonstration presented by the visiting students to one of our Year 4 classes. This was a rich and rewarding experience for everyone involved. We sincerely thank the families who generously hosted one or more of the visiting students during their time in Perth.

SVACS STARS

Congratulations to Anastasia Humboldt (Year 3) on her selection in the 2026 WA Karate State Team. Anastasia will represent Western Australia at the Karate Australia National Championships in Tasmania during the July school holidays. This is a remarkable achievement that reflects her dedication, perseverance and skill.

Well done to Dhyanesh Sondarva (Year 4) who has recently completed his RSL (Rockschool, London) Acoustic Guitar Examination – Entry Level 3 (Debut) and has achieved a Distinction (91%). He demonstrated strong command of the instrument, accuracy, and musical expression. The examiner also commended his confident performance and solid sense of timing. This is a wonderful achievement!

FUTURE ENROLMENTS 2027

Enrolment interviews for 2027 are now well underway.

Please note that interviews typically occur approximately 18 months prior to the year of entry, and a number of year groups are already full or close to capacity. Families who have not yet submitted an application for a future student are encouraged to contact our Registrar, Mrs Merri Corr, on 9297 9506 or via email at enrolments@svacs.wa.edu.au

STUDENT WITHDRAWALS

We understand that family circumstances can change—whether due to relocation, new opportunities, or other personal reasons.

If your child will be leaving SVACS, we would be grateful if you could notify us as early as possible. Timely communication helps us plan effectively, including offering positions to families on our waitlist.

Withdrawal Policy Reminder

One full term’s notice in writing is required for all student withdrawals.
This equates to at least 10 school weeks’ notice (school weeks refer to term time only, not holidays).
Withdrawal notices should be addressed to the Principal, Ms Melissa Powell, and emailed to enrolments@svacs.wa.edu.au .

CHAPLAIN’S NEWS

Happy Easter to all members of the community.

Easter is the greatest festival of the Christian year and lasts for a full 50 days. We looked forward to the celebration in our end of Term 1 Easter Service, when we welcomed Bishop Kate Wilmot as officiant. She led us to compare the excitement of school holidays, which are limited in time, to the joy of Easter, which is eternal.

In Holy Week we reflected on the story of Palm Sunday, and the crowds who welcomed Jesus with shouts of Hosanna, demonstrating their commitment to Jesus. Only a few days later, through the pervasive influence of bullying behaviour, those crowds changed their allegiance and called for his crucifixion.

Students were asked to think about their commitments, how strong they are, and the effect of others’ influence on our choices. For those of faith, and those committed to Jesus, Holy Week encourages us to grow in discipleship and strengthen our commitment.

Easter is all the more meaningful if we have struggled and resisted temptation, prayed and committed to acts of service in Lent. We cannot have oven-ready Easter joy without sharing in the darkness of the tomb, without walking, each in our own way, the way of the cross. In Holy Week, most clearly when he washes his disciples’ feet, and surrenders himself to the cross (“yet not my will, but yours be done” Luke 22: 42), we see God’s commitment to us in his Son: the ultimate in sacrifice, love and mercy.

The fifty days of Easter that we now enjoy are a time for us to process and understand in new and sometimes surprising ways, the significance of resurrection, the empty tomb, the risen presence of Jesus, and the gift of new life graciously offered to all.

WELCOME TO TERM 2!

It was a pleasure to see our students return to school, eager to begin another term of learning alongside their friends. This term, we welcomed 12 new students to Primary, and I am confident they will be warmly supported as they settle into our school community.

On the first day of term, Bertle the Turtle warmly greeted our Primary students as they arrived at school, setting a lovely tone for the term. Term 2 is off to a great start, and we look forward to continuing to support our students, families and staff in the weeks ahead.

MAXIMISING THE CONDITIONS FOR LEARNING

At our school, we intentionally focus on evidence-based strategies to maximise learning and foster a strong sense of belonging. We do this by:

Including Students: Ensuring every student feels valued, respected and safe, while actively promoting inclusivity and respect for diversity.
Engaging Students: Creating an inspiring, supportive and safe learning environment where students are motivated to be at school and have a clear understanding of expectations.
Expecting High Standards: Designing challenging and meaningful learning experiences that encourage students to strive for and achieve their full potential.
Teaching with Intention and Clarity: Explicitly teaching and modelling new concepts and skills, and providing timely, targeted feedback to support ongoing growth.
Developing Competencies: Designing lessons and learning experiences that intentionally develop the skills, capabilities and habits needed for lifelong learning.
Using Data: Using what we know about each child’s learning to inform teaching and guide them towards their next steps in their learning journey.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE

To ensure all students gain the full benefits of school, regular attendance is essential.

Students are expected to attend school at least 90% of the time. When attendance falls below this level, students may risk falling behind not only academically, but also in important areas such as social and emotional development. We encourage parents and carers to support regular school attendance wherever possible. Our school staff are available to work alongside families and provide guidance or support if attendance concerns arise.

PARTNERING WITH FAMILIES

There are some key events this term where families are encouraged to participate to learn more about their child’s learning.

Parent-Teacher Interviews are held on Tuesday, 19 May (3.30-5.30) and Thursday, 21 May (3.30-7.30). Kindergarten to Year 6 families will receive information on how to book a meeting with their child’s teacher.
On Friday 12 June, the Primary classrooms will be open from 8.45am for families to visit and talk with their child about their learning and achievements.
Semester 1 Reports will be issued at the end of Term 2, giving parents a snapshot of their child’s achievements in the first half of the year.

AROUND THE CLASSROOMS

We love to share what is happening around the Primary School. Here are some snippets from the last few weeks of Term 1.

Pre-Kindergarten children enjoyed experimenting with loose parts play. Open-ended materials, including stones, pinecones, gems, rocks and leaves, foster creativity and develop fine motor skills. Students have also enjoyed sensory activities, including mixing paint with their hands and painting their feet to make footprints.

Kindergarten – Easter Fun in Kindy! At the end of Term 1, the children were excitedly exploring Easter through lots of fun and engaging learning experiences! The children loved creating beautiful Easter crafts, including bunny ears, decorated eggs, and colourful Easter baskets. It was wonderful to see their creativity shine as they painted, glued, and designed their special creations. During their group discussions, the students enjoyed a range of lovely Easter stories. The children listened carefully and joined in discussions about the meaning of Easter and the fun traditions we celebrate at this time of year. They even went on an Easter egg hunt, where the children thoroughly enjoyed following the clues to find the Easter Bunny. What a fun way to end Term 1! The students are now looking forward to all the wonderful learning they will do in Kindergarten this term.

Pre-Primary students had a wonderful end to Term 1, filled with learning, creativity, and celebration. Over recent weeks, students have begun reading and writing simple words, exploring numbers before, after, and between other numbers, and engaging in meaningful learning about deep Indigenous listening and culture.

To conclude Term 1, students participated in a range of Easter-themed crafts and fun activities. These included dyeing boiled eggs, making bunny ears, searching for eggs in the outdoor learning area, and creating colourful crosses after learning about the Easter story from the Bible.

It has been fantastic to see how much the Pre-Primary students have grown in confidence and capability since the beginning of the year. We are incredibly proud of their progress and look forward to another fun-filled and exciting Term 2.

Year 1 students had an exciting end of Term 1! One of their highlights was celebrating Harmony Day, where students dressed in orange or wore cultural outfits to celebrate diversity and inclusion. They also enjoyed participating in Easter activities, including learning about the Easter story from the Bible. A very special part of this learning was adopting their own pretend class chicks. The students loved naming them and caring for them, showing great responsibility and enthusiasm. Another exciting moment was meeting their Year 7 buddies for the first time. The students enjoyed getting to know their buddies and are looking forward to building strong friendships throughout the year.

Year 2 - Year 2 Stepped Back in Time at Kalamunda History Village!

In Week 8, our Year 2 students enjoyed a wonderful excursion to Kalamunda History Village, bringing their learning about the past to life. Each class attended on a different day, and with the support of our fantastic parent helpers, the students explored the village in groups.

Throughout the day, students experienced what life was like over 120 years ago. They stepped into an old-style classroom to see what school was like in the past, explored historic homes, and discovered how everyday tasks such as washing clothes were done without modern conveniences. Students were especially interested in the collection of old toys and vehicles, comparing them to what we use today, and enjoyed visiting the old post office and train display.

This hands-on experience helped students make meaningful connections to their learning about how life has changed over time. It was a fantastic day filled with curiosity, discovery, and excitement. A big thank you to our parent helpers for supporting such a memorable excursion!

Year 3 students enjoyed a fantastic excursion to Perth Zoo, where they observed a variety of animals and their observable features. Students identified body coverings such as fur, feathers and scales, and discussed how features like long necks, sharp teeth, beaks and large ears help animals survive.

Throughout the day, students showed a strong commitment to their learning by asking thoughtful questions and making careful observations. They also demonstrated respectful behaviour, followed zoo rules, and represented our school proudly.

Year 4 students concluded Term 1 by showing their support for Harmony Day, proudly wearing bright orange outfits alongside a wonderful display of cultural attire. They also had the opportunity to meet their new Year 8 buddies and work collaboratively to create a Harmony Day chatterbox. It was fantastic to see students engage positively, build connections, and demonstrate commendable behaviour throughout these activities. The day was rounded off with a relaxed and enjoyable afternoon, where students spent time with their peers and looked forward to a well-earned break.

Year 5 students joyfully celebrated Harmony Day alongside their buddy class, sharing a meaningful session focused on inclusion, respect and friendship. Students worked together to create colourful chatterboxes, designed to spark conversations, encourage understanding and help build positive connections across year levels. Laughter and thoughtful discussion filled the room as buddies opened up and learned more about one another. It was wonderful to see everyone embracing the spirit of Harmony Day, proudly wearing traditional cultural dress or bright orange to show that everyone belongs. The celebration was a heart‑warming reminder of the power of kindness, conversation and community within our school.

Year 6 - It has been an exciting time in Year 6. The students have received their Celebration shirts! The students have also been working hard in English, finishing their natural disaster poems and rehearsing for their poetry recitals with their classes. The students focused on variations in pace, tone, and volume during their recitals to engage their audience. They should be congratulated on also demonstrating resilience during the presentation process. In other exciting news, the Collaboration and Creativity Centre is open, and 6A were fortunate enough to be the first class to take out library books from our new resource centre, as they were chosen as ‘guinea pigs’ to trial the new booking system.

Physical Education – This year’s Primary School Interhouse Swimming Carnival was our biggest yet, with the most swimmers we have ever had competing and 16 more events added from last year. It was a big day of competition, with non-stop swimming events in the pool and water-based team games taking place on the grassed area. The day finished off with the all-inclusive noodle race, which is always a favourite. The day ran very smoothly thanks to the help of primary staff and secondary student helpers, making sure that everyone made it to their events and had a successful day. Well done to everyone involved!

We also competed in the WACSSA Swimming Carnival. This year was our first Division 1 carnival after being promoted last year. We did extremely well this year, finishing fourth overall and only just missing out on third place by a very small margin! We also had two standout individual performances, with Chloe from Year 4 and Paige from Year 5, both winning Champion Girl!

Music – At the final assembly of last term, students from Years 3–12 were treated to a beautiful and uplifting performance by our Junior Choir. Their warm tones, confident singing, and joyful energy created a memorable moment to close out the term.

As the official party entered the MPH, the choir led the processional with an enthusiastic rendition of Shine, Jesus, Shine. They also performed Lord of the Dance, delighting the audience with their bright sound and expressive performance.

The students worked incredibly hard to prepare both pieces in a short time, all while continuing to rehearse their repertoire for the upcoming Winter Concert in Week 5 of Term 2. Their commitment, teamwork, and musical growth were evident on stage, and we look forward to seeing them shine again soon.

Visual Arts – In Term 1, the focus artist for the wonderful Year 5s was Australian contemporary artist Pete Cromer. Pete’s work is fun and is known for bursts of colour and texture. Looking at his bold collages of Australian birds and birds of prey, the students were inspired to re-create their own birds. Learning collage skills of tracing, cutting, gluing, and layering their own painted pieces of paper, students showed much enthusiasm and had a lot of fun with this project.

Digital Technologies – It may have been the last week of term, but Year 5 students were busy finishing their Binary topic. Year 3 students were also hard at work, testing their knowledge of input, output, and storage devices in preparation for PowerPoint's next term. Year 6 were introduced to animations in PowerPoint and are using this skill to show how data is transferred between computers. Finally, Year 4 finished coding shapes in Scratch, and are ready to reimagine their 2D drawings into 3D shapes using Tinkercad.

SECONDARY SCHOOL UPDATE

As we came to the end of Term 1, it has been encouraging to reflect on the growth, connections and learning that have taken place across Secondary.

A highlight of the term was the Year 7 Camp, where students challenged themselves through a range of activities including archery, high ropes, water‑based challenges and a treasure hunt, while also enjoying shared experiences such as an evening outdoor movie. These opportunities supported students to build confidence, resilience and new and stronger connections with both peers and staff. We finished the term on a high note with Harmony Week, celebrating the diversity of our community through shared activities and the vibrant display of cultural dress and orange across the school. It was a wonderful way to close the term with a strong sense of belonging and community spirit.

We hope that all our Secondary families enjoyed a safe and rejuvenating Easter break.

WINTER UNIFORM REMINDER – TERM 2 AND TERM 3

A reminder to families that Term 2 marks a return to Winter Uniform requirements. We ask that all families familiarise themselves with the Uniform Guidelines and partner with us in ensuring students arrive at school each day in the correct uniform.

Many students have grown since last winter, so please ensure skirts are worn just above the knee, as short skirts are not permitted.

Students are expected to be in formal winter uniform daily, unless they have before‑school sport—there are no exceptions to this expectation.

Please note that Nike Air Force sneakers and Mary Jane shoes are not approved formal footwear, in line with the Uniform Guidelines.

STUDENT ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCES

If a student is to be absent from school for the day or part of the day, parents/carers are asked to notify Student Services.

This can be actioned through SEQTA parent app (preferable), email to student.services@svacs.wa.edu.au or by telephone (08) 9297 9506 with the reason before 8.30am on the day of the absence. If your child is arriving late, please ensure that they sign in at Secondary Student Services before commencing to class.

If your child’s absence is 5 school days or longer, please email Keralee Radi Keralee.Radi@svacs.wa.edu.au with an explanation of the situation.

If the absence affects your child’s ability to complete an assessment, parent/carers must complete a School Sickness/Misadventure Form and supply medical evidence to Celena Mecham Celena.Mecham@svacs.wa.edu.au for special consideration to the mark to be applied.

We take this opportunity to remind you of school policy in relation to family holidays taken during term time.

As per the School Education Act (1999) parents and carers are required to send their child of compulsory school age on each day that the school is open unless there is a good reason not to send them.

School holidays are provided at the end of each term to allow children time to spend with family. For this reason, holidays taken during term time are unauthorised absences as students are not participating in the educational program.

NEW PROCEDURE FOR COLLECTION OF SECONDARY STUDENTS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY

In recognition of students’ age and stage of development and taking into consideration parent feedback, the Secondary School (Year 7 to 12 only) will be trialling a new procedure for the collection of students during the school day when they have essential appointments.

Parents/carers are asked to notify Student Services, in advance preferably by email, of the day, time and reason their child will require collection.
At the agreed time, the student must present to Student Services to sign out.
Student Services will ensure parent/carer contact has been received and recorded before the student is permitted to walk independently to be collected from the Secondary Kiss and Drop zone.
Upon returning to school, students are required to sign back in at Student Services.

Parents/carers may continue to collect their child directly from Student Services if they prefer. Please refer to our Campus map where Secondary Student Services is located.

YEAR 11 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION EXCURSION TO ST GEORGE’S CATHEDRAL

All Years 11 and 12 students study the AngliSchools Endorsed Program of Religious Education, beginning in Year 11 by exploring Anglicanism from their perspective as students in an Anglican school.

On Monday 23 March, all Year 11s visited St George’s Anglican Cathedral to complete four components of the Anglicanism unit: worship and prayer, sacraments, the scriptures, and Anglican structures and traditions.

The Cathedral is a ‘home’ extending a welcome to all students and former students of our schools. One of the final events for our Year 12s is the Valedictory Eucharist, celebrated in this beautiful, historic building. It is full of treasures and symbols to be interpreted and enjoyed.

As well as completing written work, and using their senses to experience the spaces, students asked questions and identified historical and spiritual points of connection with their lives as Western Australians, and as part of the Anglican family.

My thanks to the staff who attended, led groups and supported student needs, and to the many students who represented us so well in this very public setting.

YEAR 10 HUMANITIES EXCURSION TO WA MUSEUM BOOLA BARDIP

During Term 1, two groups of Year 10 students went on an excursion to the WA Museum, Boola Bardip.

On the excursion, we participated in interactive classroom lessons where we were able to build our knowledge on the conditions experienced by the First Nations people. We went on a tour around the Ngalang Koort Boodja Wirn gallery, looking at the experiences of different Indigenous Australians, seeing their achievements and learning about their histories. Attending the excursion assisted us to gain a deeper insight into the background and moments of the Australian Civil Rights Movement and we were able to visualise and view the artefacts and stories in relation to our concepts of learning. We found the gallery to be the most engaging aspect of our excursion, as it provided valuable insight into the lives of Indigenous Australians, through tangible artefacts from the past. The gallery deepened our understanding and allowed us to form a more meaningful connection to their experiences, helping us to develop a more in-depth and reflective perspective of the history that has shaped Australia.
